Rose Bratsis Zimmerman a 1955 Gary High Schoo Graduate Columbia, S.C. - Rose Bratsis Zimmerman, 73, widow of Ralph W. Zimmerma, died Thursday, October 1, 2009 at her home. Born in Pageton, West Virginia, she was a daughter ofthe late Tony and Lelia Ellis Bratsis. Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Surviving is one brother, George W. Bratsis and wqife helbie of High Point, NC; two sister, Marina Hallinan of Sumter and Goldie Woolen and huband Don of Missouri; several neices and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Costa Bratsis and Robert H. Bratsis; two sisters, Ruby Farmer and Ruth Frazier. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2009 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with Bshop Lath Harris and Bishop Tony Ashworth officiating. Burial will be in the Florence National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ ofLatter ay Saints. Elsie Gardener Hickam a 1930 Gary High School Graduate Garden City, S.C. - Elsie Gardener Hickam, 97, a former resident of Gary and Coalwood and the mother of Homer Hickam, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, in Garden City, S.C. Hickam, the author of the popular "Rocket Boys" memoirs, contacted the Daily Telegraph Friday via e-mail to inform the region of his mother`s passing. "Mom had a great life", Hickam said in a statement. " Everything she wanted to do , she did. She was know for her tenacity, her love of life, her raw intelligence, and her wisdom . She raised two sons, an alligator, a fox , a squirrel, and numerous dogs and cats, all of whom she loved. They just don`t make them like her any more. Her family and friends are going to miss her but we take comfort she stayed true to herself to the end." Elsie Hickam was born June 15, 1912, in McDowell County near Gary, Hickam lived for many years in Coalwood before moving to live in Garden City, S.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Hickam Sr., who died on Sept. 2, 1989. Until his retirement, Homer Hickam Sr. was the mine superintendent of Olga Coal Company. Her brothers Kenneth, Joe, Charlie, Victor, and James Kent also preceded her in death. Elsie Hickam was a 1930 graduate of Gary High School, and was active in many organizations in Coalwood, including the Coalwood Community Church Methodists Women`s Circle and the Olga Women`s Club. She also supported local schools, and worked tirelessly to raise funds for a variety of student activities. She was prominently featured in the memoris written by her son, including "rocket Boys," "The Coalwood Way," "Sky of Stone," and "We Are Not Afraid," according to information provided by Burke Allen of Allen Media Strategies. Elsie Hickam`s character was played by Natalie Canerday in the award winning 1999 motion picture "October Sky". Her oldest son, Jim, was for many years the football coach at Northside High School in Roanoke. Her youngest son, Homer "Sonny" Hickam Jr. retired from NASA as an engineer and continues working today as a popular novelists. She is survived by her sister Mary Lavender of Mount Airy,N.C., two sons, James Venable Hickam and wife Betty Laphew of Roanoke, Va., and Homer (Sonny) Hickam, Jr. and wife Linda Terry of Huntsville, Alabama. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Cheyanne Hickam of Roanoke, and three great grandsons, James David, Michael and Rex Hadley Morgan. Memorial services will be private. |

Leon S. "Sonnybuck" Allison Sr. , A 1967 Gary High School Graduate Terrell, Texas - Leon S. "Sonnybuck" Allison, Sr., age 62, of Terrell,Texas, formerly of Gary, departed this life on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 in Terrell. Leon was born December 22, 1947 in Gary and was the son of Leon "Babe" Allison of Gary and the late Grace L. Thompson Allison. He attended Gary District High School, was a graduate of Gary High School, class of 1967 and attended Bluefield State College. He played football for two years with the Canadian Football League an received an award and was inducted into the WV ABSSA Hall Of Fame in April 2008 as an outstanding athlete. Leon was employed with U.S. Steel in Gary for 15 years and a member of the UMWA Local No. 7905. He was a police officer and Fire Chief for the City of Gary for 25 years. In 1986, he moved to Terrell and worked for Bibble Construction Company, Terry City Water Treatment Plant and was last employed as a foreman for Ingersoll-Rand in Garland, Texas. He was a member and served as junior warden of Shiloh Masonic Lodge No. 153 and attended the Church of Christ in Terrell. In addition to his mother, those preceding him in death include his wife, Maggie Allison; and his son, Corey D. Allison, Sr.; and a grandson,Savaught R. Younger. Leon leaves many cherished memories to his father; and his children, Tracy Allison of Gary, Leon Allison, Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Nicole Allison, Thomas Casey,Jr. and Carlos Casey and wife, Zuleka, all of Terrell, Nicholas and wife, Shawn Allison and Katrina Casey, both of Dallas, Texas, LaJuan Moore of Bluefield; one sister, Betty Grace Maxwell and husband, James of Terrell; 17 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nephews; one neice; and a host of other realitives and many friends. A Celebration of Life Service for Leon S. Allison, Sr. will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Gary with the Elder J.T. Horton officiating, assisted by the Reverends Ronald Dyer, Larry Hairston and Hiawatha Spraggins. Pallbearers and flower bearers will be family and friends.
