Joe Andrew Heizer a 1967 Graduate of Gary High School Elbert, W.Va - Joe Andrew Heizer, III, age 59, of Elbert, W.Va., died peacefully Sunday morning, June 14, 2009 surrounded by his loving family at his residence. Born August 2, 1949 in Welch, W.Va., he was the son of the late Joe Andrew Heizer, II and Betty Ann Queen Heizer. He was a 1967 graduate of Gary High School. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church , Gary, W.Va. He worked for Multiple Elevator Companys as an installer. He loved gardening and was a resident of Elbert most of his life. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. His survivors include two sons, Duston Heizer and wife Jennifer of Atlanta, Ga., Joshua Heizer and wife Rose of Locust Grove, Ga.; four grandchildren, Caleb Heizer, Noah Heizer, Abigail Heizer, and Aiden Heizer; one brother, Larry Heizer of Elbert; one sister, Betty Ann Sprouse of Welch, W.Va.; one Aunt, Mary Ann Woolard of Chicago, Ill.; nephews and neices, Felicia and Michael Spencer, Roy and Cindy Salmons, Phillip and Brittney Sprouse, Neil Heizer, Christopher Heizer and Michelle Laneave. Mass of Christian Funeral will be celebrated Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Gary, W.Va. with Father That Son-Nguyen as Celebrant. Nick Cavallo a 1939 Gary High School Graduate Charlotte, N.C. - Nick Cavallo, beloved by family and a host of friends, passed away at the age of 87 at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte,N.C. on Sunday, July 19, 2009. He was the eldest son of the late Steve and Margherita Cavallo and a brother to Geno Cavallo and wife Gloria of Port St. Lucie, Fl. and Anthony Cavallo of Princeton, W.Va. Nick`s wife and war bride of 62 years, Josephine Arcoleo Cavallo, surives him. The couple have three children, Margaret White and husband Danny of Waxhaw, N.C., Josie Mabry and husband Larry of Morrisville, N.C., and Steven Cavallo and wife Malinda of St. Charles, Mo. Nick was the grandfather to eleven grandchildren, Jennifer McKenzie and husband Donald, Bill Connor and wife Missy, Tony Connor, Billy Joe Mabry, John Mabry and wife Melissa, Lauren Mabry, Nick Cavallo and wife Hanna, Matt Cavallo, and stepgrandchildren, Trent White and wife Nicole, Stephen White, and Stephanie Linderberger and husband Mike. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Alyssa McKenzie, Ty Connor, Hudson Connor and Morgan Connor; great-stepgrandchildren, logan Hoffer, John Conrad and Elise White. Nick is also survived by a number of neices and nephews, Louis and Pam Cavallo, joe and Tonya Cavallo, John Cavallo, Michael Cavallo and Christine and John Miller. He was surrounded in life with many friends and particularly his dear friend, Henry Paul. Born in Modugno Bari, Italy on January 20, 1922, Nick came to America in 1935 and lived in New York for a short while. After a couple of years the Cavallo family moved to the coalfields of West Virginia where the remainderof Nick`s life was spent. He was a resident of Gary at his passing. He attended schools in New York, Welch, Gary,Wilcoe and Elbert. Once he turned 18, Nick went to work for U.S. Steel. He was drafted by the Army in 1943 and served in Europe during World War II. Upon his return to the states, he resumed work with U.S. Steel and ultimately retired in 1985 as a blacksmith/welder after 45 years of service. Nick was a member of the Gary Lions Club, the United Mine Workers of America, a lifetime member of the American Legion, a Veteran of World War II, and a lifelong member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Gary. Visitation will be at the Fanning Funeral Home located at Coney Island in Welch, W.Va. from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday July 22, 2009, with a Scripture Wake Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church on Thursday July 23, 2009 at 11 a.m. with Father That Son Nguyen, celebrant. Entombment will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Bluewell, W.Va. Nick`s grandsons will serve as pallbearers, and the American Legion and Gary Lions Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers donations canbe made to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Box 130, Gary, W.Va. 24836 in memory of a man who was devoted to his faith. Military rites at the cemetery will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 1144 of Iaeger and American Legion Post 175 of Bradshaw. Fanning Funeral Home of Welch is serving the Cavallo family. Gertrude Christian Stone a 1942 Gary High School Graduate Gary, W.Va. - Gertrude Christian Stone, 84, of Gary, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009, after a lengthy illness, at Welch Community Hospital, with her lovinf family by her side. Born in Elbert, W.Va., December 21,1924, she was the only daughter of the late Lloyd H. and Edna Swartz Christian. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Lloyd (Buddy); and her mother - in-law and father-in-law, Baxter and Annie Stone. "Gertie" as known by her family and friends was a life time memberof Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Unit 38 American Legion Auxillary, member of Gary United Methodist Church and the Juantia Watson Circle. She enjoyed cooking and baking beautifuk cakes. Gertie and her beloved husband Earl were instrumental in organizing their Class of 41 and 42 reunions. Gertie was previously employed by U.S. Steel in Gary, Dr. Coulon`s Medical Office, (Dr. Coulon had also had the honor of delivering Gertie on December 21, 1924) and she retired from the City of Gary as office clerk in 1982. She is survived by her loving and caring husband, Earl, (they would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary, August 21, 2009); two daughters, Pam Kinder and husband Jack of Bluefield, Va. and Kathy Umberger and husband Ralph of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two grandsons, Les and Brad Umberger also of Georgia; three stepdaughters, Angela Jayna Strong and husband Curtis of Bryan, Texas, Michelle Strong and husband Barry of Flower Mound, Texas, Melissa Sweet and husband Robert of Bryan, Texas ; eight step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Gordon Christian and wife Ruby of Pounding Mill, Va.; three brothers-in-law; several neices and nephews and a host of cousins and friends will deeply miss Gertie. A celebration of her life services will be conducted at Fanning FuneralHome in Welch, Friday, August 7, 2009, with the Rev. Orville Harvey, Pastor Elizabeth Yost, and PastorCharlene Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
