Gary HS Football field today.Is quiet and still with an ocassional jogger passing by. I am told that if you walk out onto this field and close your eyes you can hear the cheers of the fans and students of times long gone as the Coaldigger football teams of the past run down the field scoring touchdowns lighting up the scoreboard beating teams such as Big Creek,Bluefield and of course Welch . If you listen close you can hear the PA speaker proclaim its a Gary 1st down on the Welch five yard line , the chanting of the cheerleaders the roar of the fans as the diggers score.The Diggers win again and everyone drives to the Elbert hall for the Victory dance . Memories flood back to those times but when you open your eyes all you see is the quiet empty field and darkened score board.Pack up the barrel the party is over the gangs all gone.
